About

In October of 2015 we purchased a building in downtown The Dalles Oregon. It was built in 1864 with a two story brick addition in 1890. You could see daylight through the roof and a bird was flying around inside. We had 16 buckets catching the rain that poured in. The terracotta sewer pipes had collapsed and the utility company wouldn’t turn on the power without the electrical inspector’s o.k.

Our courtyard was part of the site of the 2nd and 3rd Catholic churches before the Gothic styled St. Peters was completed next door in 1898. Historic Vogt Hall is also adjacent to us. These three properties have served as gathering places in the community for over 150 years.

The plan:

  1. Restore historic building and grounds to serve for the next 150 years.
  2. Redevelop for modern usability.
  3. Establish space as the heart of The Dalles for community, connection and culture.

We intentionally say “we” when referring to this project. Herbring House is for and by the people. People in and outside the community are helping this vision to come true. To be part of this endeavor or to just watch it unfold, follow this website or Facebook for updates.

Here is a list of things/skills we need. Perhaps you know of someone who is getting rid of what we are looking for or is handy with a saw. Positive thoughts and prayers gladly accepted and always appreciated. Thank you for your interest and for stopping by.
